Science Searches For Life In Martian Ice

phoenix-lands-on-mars.jpgThe Phoenix successfully landed on Mars last night. Assuming there are no technical difficulties with the solar arrays, camera, and robotic arm – the search for ice can begin in earnest. Ice, or rather water, is important because it is necessary to sustain life. While scientists are “pretty confident” that water exists on mars… they haven’t actually found it yet. No, just evidence of water – ie markings in the surface that sure look like water made them.

There are also the ice caps on Mars – but we don’t know they’re made of ice. I know this is a tad confusing with way that many PhDs talk about space, but the truth is the most powerful telescope in the world can only give scant information about even our own planetary brothers and sisters. We can quickly learn so much more by actually being there – or at least getting a surrogate there for us. (The reasons many can speak with such with such certainty is that since no one else in the world has been there – who can tell them that they are wrong?)

Assuming that ice can be discovered in vast the 1/2 meter drilling reach of the robotic arm – 10 years of scientific conjecture will be vindicated. But that’s not the real mission of the Phoenix. The ice is also hoped to contain organic molecules (containing carbon, oxygen, hydrogen) as the cu de gra for proof of life on Mars.

Now I know I’ve lost a few people there: How does a trace bit of carbon in ice prove life roamed around on Mars? Because science holds that life was created out of a primordial soup (water, amino acids & such + energy) finding anything loosely resembling this soup elsewhere would

  1. prove life existed on Mars since evolution is inevitable given the right building blocks and enough time.
  2. prove life evolved on Earth since life existed on two planets in the same solar system which statistically means that life evolved on thousands (if not millions) of planets beyond Earth. Meaning life here is not special or unique as implied by the biblical account of creation.

Pretty important couple of molecules, eh?

Bike Record

Well I set a new personal record for bike distance yesterday. My brother and I went out with some leisurely MT bikers and then we went for another 20 miles after they left. That’s right a total over 35 miles in a single ride. The worst part was that I got a cramp in my right quad at about mile 30… but what are you gonna do when the car is still 5 miles away?

  • Bike 35.25 miles – 2:43:34 (13 mph, 1542 cals)

Training For The Dam Trathlon

Wow. I tried to look up my old training reg but, I was apparently REALLY lazy about posting my training progress for the Sports Barn Tri last year… only one posting in March. I didn’t even log in my newer better faster race day time!  I don’t feel like digging that up today but watch for it soon.

I only have time for a quick update of this years training.  I’m still having great results by training like a Navy Seal:

  • Pushups: 200
  • Pullups: 60
  • Dips: 100
  • Crunches: 150
  • Running: 5 mile intervals
  • Biking: 18 miles
  • Swim: na

E-Car Alternatives

Due to the response to our E-Car roundup we’ve included the cars everyone said we were missing… A lot of you seem very excited about the “smart” cars but i just don’t get it. Go the traditional econo car route and you’ll be a lot happier.

Smart ForTwo Passion – $14,000 smart_fortwo.jpg

  • Gas (econo)
  • 70 HP
  • 0-60 in 12.8 seconds
  • 90 mph top speed
  • 33-41 mpg*
  • 2 seater
  • 1/2 sized

The Smart ForTwo claims it gets 33/41 mpg but I believe that’s based on the “pure” model that doesn’t have an AC or radio. Real world testing shows a 32 mpg average*. Which isn’t bad but it certainly isn’t that good considering how ugly this car is or that it only sports a 3 cylinder engine. If you like the Jetsons buy this car. If you want to carry around more than your man purse – look elsewhere.

Why is this car such a rage in Europe then you ask? Because European countries are cute little places that lack -um- space. The Smart ForTwo is 1/2 sized. Meaning it can fit in the 1/2 spaces available in Europe. Here in vast America you don’t have to worry about how many scooters you’re displacing – and 1/2 sized spaces don’t exist. Seriously this car was design to save space – not the planet.

Honda Fit 09 – $14-20,000 fit1.jpg

  • Gas (econo)
  • 120 HP (up 11 from 08)
  • 28-34 mpg
  • 0-60 in 8.9 seconds
  • 4 seater

Winner of Car & Drivers 10 Best, the Fit hatchback is currently the econo-car with both the most fun and the most people & cargo capacity.
