Change A Honda Fit Cabin Filter

Newer cars now have a cabin filter on the vent system to remove dust and allergens from your AC.  It’s actually easy to change out yourself in 2-3 minutes.  So pay $20 at your local car parts store instead of the $80+ your dealer will charge. I was shocked that I couldn’t find good instructions on the internets for a non-2007 model fit. I mean it’s the internet! With 2011 models rolling off the assembly line here’s a nice pictorial reference for those of you with a 2nd generation Honda Fit (2008, 2009, 2010 and yes even 2011).

1) Open glove box

2) Remove stuff from glove box

3) Press the sides of the glove box inward and lower the glove box all the way down on it’s hinge

4) Don’t be fooled by the rattle stopping white pad on the back of the glove box!

5) Locate the two tabs left and right center of the whole you’ve created in your dash (red circles in pic) and press inward and then it pull out.

6) Simply lift the dirty square filter out of the black plastic box and replace with new filter

7) Work the steps in reverse to put everything back

Done!  Savings: $20-30/minute depending on DIY-er speed.

Dancing In Heaven

The following is something originally in my part of the Boys On Dan that I had to cut out for time:

More recently in addition to Mighty To Save, the other song that was significant to me on this journey was Promised Land.

I’m going to see my Savior, I’m going to see my Lord,
I’m going to sing forever, ain’t gonna cry no more…
When they lay me underneath a heavy stone, and the cold grave grips my bones.
Don’t cry for me for in Glory I will be, dancing around the throne!

Now if that last part doesn’t make you smile then you’ve never seen my father dance!

The topic of dancing in heaven actually came up in one of our discussions in May or June. I had been taking lessons the last year or so but had just started videoing them to aid my memory of what I had learned when I practiced. I was showing dad a few of my latest moves from the tape, and he told me that he looked forward to dancing it heaven because he would be much better at it there than he was here.

Now, my father and I had a theological difference of opinion over whether or not his new body would have the same two left feet that his first body did. My father believed in a more extensive “instant knowledge” (I’m sure there is probably a $5 seminary word for this) in the next life than I do. We agree that in the next life, the question of the Godhood and our relation to them will not exist. The veil over that intrinsic knowledge – that in this life is necessary for Free Will to exist – will be removed. The naked truth of our failings in this life will be painfully apparent as well. The elects’ minds will definitely be clearer without sin, age, disease, and the enemy to cloud them. However I believe that our normal experiential knowledge will be largely unchanged. (I think a study of Eden along with certain passages concerning angels and visions of heaven support this position) How better to pass the infinite time in heaven than to learn and grow towards our potential inside a relationship with the King God and alongside fellow believers? Isn’t that a much more interesting heaven than the 24/7 singing-in-the-choir viewpoint of many?

That is not to say Dan had the choir view – far from it. I simply mention it here for contrast. Dad viewed his lack of dance ability as a fault of an imperfect body that would be corrected in his perfect one. (skill being included in knowledge here) However, I suspect he has discovered his healthy new body still needs to be trained in some new moves. ;)

I could be wrong, but skilled or not – one thing I’m sure of is that he’s groovin’ up there with a huge smile on his face. What my father lacked in dance ability he more than made up for with his “reckless abandon” approach to fun. Much like when King David danced before the Lord with similar abandon (to point of embarrassing of David’s wife) that is how I envision Dad dancing.

So that’s why I like this song. When I hear that passage, I can envision Dan in the throne room leaping and bouncing and “dancing” with joy.   And by the time I get there he won’t need those quotes… and can show me a thing or two.  :D

The Perfect Tablet

With Apple’s mythical tablet supposedly being unveiled next week and tons of companies trying to beat them to the punch: a lot of people are talking about the perfect tablet.  Here’s my take.

The perfect tablet needs to fill the -somewhat narrow- gap between smart phones and netbooks.  The iPhone has a 3.5″ 480×320 display and weighs under 5oz.  The typical netbook has a 10″ 1024×600 display and weighs under 3lbs. A tablet will compete with ereaders so those must be kept in mind as well.  The Kindle has a 6″ 600×800 display and it weighs 10oz.

So tablet should have a 7-9″ with at least 800×600 resolution up to either a 1024×800 or 1280×720 depending on aspect ratio.  It should weigh between one and two pounds with lighter being better except at the expense of battery life.  A 2lb tablet with 6 hours of battery life will out sell a 1lb device with just 2 hrs.  And battery life is key meaning that the hardware should either a snapdragon ARM or Nvidia’s tegra: both can power HD video at a smart phone level power draw.  The screen should be the Pixel Qi as it supports multi-touch and conserve power in e-ink mode.  Not to mention helping any tablet compete with the dedicated ereaders.  As for OS you have two choices really: windows 7 or Android.  Win 7 has the advantage of easy transition from PCs but may bring with that unrealistic expectations.  Droid has much promise but is still a tad high on the potential to actual software ratio.  Lastly, the perfect tablet should include the most commonly overlooked port in these devices: SD.  People bring netbooks on vacation for web or work sure – but also to view/backup digicam pics which is why an SD slot is crucial to utility.

So to summarize the “Perfect Tablet” with currently available hardware:

  • 8.9″ Pixel Qi 1024×600 multi-touch screen
  • Nvidia Tegra CPU/GPU
  • Wireless: b/g/n & BT
  • 60GB 1.8″ HD or SSD
  • 256MB RAM
  • Ports: Headphones, mini USB, SD
  • 256 x 134 x 17 mm
  • 800 grams
  • Android 2.1
  • 10 hr battery life

* dimensions taken from the Archos 9 tablet

Nvidia Tegra + Pixel Qi screen = 1 Awesome Tablet

Nvidia Tegra can power 1080p video and even Unreal 3 engine gaming with great battery life.  The Pixel Qi screen can operate in normal color screen mode or an e-ink mode that uses only 0.2 watts and is readable in sunlight.  Multi-touch supported.  The bar just moved way up for Apple’s still mythical tablet.

The gaming is at ~7min in the video the Qi is after that.

Chris Matthews & Howard Dean Call Each Other Crazy

This video is hilarious!

If more news was like this A) more people would watch and B) we’d have a more honest government

War is breaking out among liberals, and the entertainment value might make Avatar look like a test signal.

Just make yourself comfortable, sit back, and watch Chris Matthews and Howard Dean go after each other on this evening’s Hardball. Dean was floating the absurd argument that by choosing Scott Brown over Martha Coakley, voters were sending a secret coded message that they really wanted a health care bill . . . more liberal than the current Obamacare version.

Matthews calls Dean out on his lack of logic, and the pair wind up trading accusations of craziness.
