No River City

I discovered a new band last nite: No River City. I would have snapped some pics with my camera phone but the venue was really dark so I didn’t waste my time… but their lead singer looks a lot like the that guy from My Name Is Earl:

They’re a talented rising group from Atlanta. They’re style is rock with a tad of country and a dash of Americana. They’ll be a band to watch as they definately have the skills, charisma, attitude, and song writting ability to be the next Eddie From Ohio. My personal favorite was a song about falling in love with a billboard lady. They are currently working on their second album and, from the sampling we heard, it’s going to be great.I give them :
The probably could have gotten another half star at a venue more suited to their style and their electric guitarist – while extremely talented – could use some caffeine to up his charisma to the level of the group.

Only 10 Years Left

“‘Al is a funny guy.’ But he is also a very serious guy who believes humans may have only 10 years left to save the planet from turning into a total frying pan.” – Washington Post

Rush Limbaugh apparently found Al Gore’s prediction histerical or very insightful becuase he has posted a 10 year count down timer to “World Destruction!” I leave you to ponder Rush’s attitude: serious or sarcasm. ;)

How Not To Handle Money

I was listening to the Dave Ramsey talk show recently and a lady called in and had done the following financially…

She took out a home loan to consolidate her $8000 in credit card debt. Fairly normal. For reasons undisclosed she chose a new 1st mortgage instead of a 2nd mortgage or some other type of home equity line of credit. Which meant she had to pay closing costs (though you can usually get a lower interest rate). Since her credit was bad, she had to pay $7000 in closing costs and still only got an interest rate of 9% (which many people have on their credit cards). This $7000 was, of course, added to the new mortgage — since if you had $7000 you could all but pay off the credit cards. The best part is that she actually took $15000 of equity out of her house (and only increased her loan by $22000) and so she had $7000 left over. She then decided to called Dave Ramsey the king of “get out of debt at all costs” to ask how she could best invest that $7000. Nice.

For you number crunchers out there: When you consider the closing costs her effective interest rate was actually 10.8% on that $15K and that’s spread across a 30 year loan…. it’s actually much worse spread across, oh, say 10 years… then your at a 20% effective interest rate. Ouch.

Telegraph?

“Effective January 27, 2006, Western Union will discontinue all Telegram and Commercial Messaging services” – WesternUnion.com

That’s right, no more telegraphs. While at first this seems hilarious that it took until 2006 to kill the telegraph — you know, now that high-speed internet connections are generally available to cellular phones… On the other hand, it kinda makes me sad that it’s gone. I mean if I had know that telegraphs were still around last month, I would have gone and sent a few just for the nostalgia of it. Ok so nostalgia probably isn’t the best word, but you know what I mean… It’s like riding on a train or something (who still uses trains?)

  • Western Union abandons telegramsUPDATE: Apparently quite a few telegrams were sent on January 27th… All in the attempt to be the last telegram in history.
