Retro-Running

A new fad is spreading in Europe: running backwards.  The inducted call themselves retro-athletes.  They also consider themselves part of an "Xtreme" sport, as opposed to oh, stupid.

Let's break this down for a minute.  Retro-runners think it's better exercise to run backwards. Doctors claim it isn't. Look, just because something is more difficult does NOT mean that it is better or even worthwhile.  I mean it's difficult to break boards with your head, but that doesn't make it a worthwhile pursuit or even an extreme sport.

Now beyond the coordination issues and health benefit discussion, I'm sure you are all wondering… how do they know where they are going? The simple but sad answer is mirrors. Yup mirrors.  Some try to looking over their shoulder instead of the mirror route, but neither option really works all that well.  Crashing and tripping are common place.  I guess that's Xtreme.

We really shouldn't be surprised however that Europe is again doing something @ss-backwards.  They are getting kind of pathetic in their attempts to stay relevant in the rapidly changing global landscape…. They used to be the center of the world you know – now they are little more than a nice vacation spot.

Tri 2 Update

Fit in another run out on the road… I forgot to hit stop on my Garmin between my run and cool down, so I don't have an exact time for this run.

  • Run 2.5 Miles – less than 30 min (299 Cal)

Tri 2 Update

A friend asked me how fast a pace I could run for several miles.  I answered that when in shape I could keep about a 7 min/mile pace over a 5k run.  Unfortunately, since I'm not in shape, I fear that I could only keep a 12min/mile pace.

The conversation made me curious about how out of shape I had become with all my other obligations this summer.  Happily I had only fallen to an 11min/mile pace.  Apparently my DDR workouts I had fit in were maintaining at least some cardio fitness.

  • Run 3.0 Miles – 33:17 (423 Cal)

Tri 2 Update

Another day another ride — except it's been a bit since my last… According to my Forerunner, May 13th! Ouch.  Too much time finishing the basement and not enough training.  Today's going to hurt.

Oh yeah only did a half distance today and that was plenty.

  • Bike 12.74 Miles – 57:17 (581 Cal)

Tri 2 Update

Did a morning bike ride today.  Nice day, but my Lucky Charms wore a little thin near the end.  Guess I'm used to more food in my system before the long rides.  The high winds also upped the difficulty today.  Also my heart rate monitor kept fading out – may be time for a new battery.

  •  Bike 23.55 Miles – 1:48:46 (1036 Cals & ? BMP)
